Tobacco-Free Pharmacies

Help keep tobacco out of local pharmacies!

Pharmacies are turned to everyday as a resource on health and well-being. Such places should not be selling deadly products such as cigarettes and chew. This is a concern since pharmacies sell items that attract many youth customers, including candy, toys, and school supplies.

The Smoke-Free Marin Coalition is collecting letters for the Smoke-Free Pharmacies Campaign to help take tobacco products out of our pharmacies. Please read the information below and send a letter showing your support.

The case against tobacco products is clear:

  • Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States causing approximately 438,000 deaths a year.
  • Tobacco is also the only consumable product that will kill at least half its users.

Taking tobacco out of pharmacies is also clear:

  • Selling tobacco products violates the pharmacist’s code of conduct which requires a commitment to the welfare of patients and to avoid actions that compromise patients’ best interests.
  • Over 98% of licensed pharmacists in northern California support such tobacco-free pharmacies.
  • 72.3 percent of California consumers do not think pharmacies should sell tobacco products. Moreover, 97% of consumers would choose to shop at pharmacies with either the same frequency or more often if they were tobacco-free.
  • The vast majority of independent pharmacies do not sell tobacco. Instead, most tobacco sales occur at pharmacies owned by large corporations.

Cities from coast to coast have adopted a tobacco-free pharmacy ordinance. As part of our effort, please show your support for the Tobacco-Free Pharmacy Campaign.

Letters can be returned to: Smoke-Free Marin Coalition @ 10 N. San Pedro Rd. STE 1015 San Rafael, CA 94903 and will be passed on to the your local city council as appropriate.
